STUDIO REQUIREMENTS:
A studio with a north facing window to allow the sunlight to be constant with no changing direct sun beaming into the room.
PROCEDURE:
1) On top of a ground of white, raw umber and burnt sienna, start to draw out the image using raw umber, since it is the quickest drying pigment, mixed with a little turpentine.
2) Once the line drawing is dry, block in the shadows with raw umber mixed with turpentine.
3) Begin to block in the 'local' or 'dead' colours of each part of the picture. The local colour is the colour not in highlight nor in shadow. It is the true color of the object.
4) Alongside blocking in 'local' colours, begin to add raw umber to the dark areas.
5) Until finally, once all 'local' areas and the dark areas are dry, subsequent layers of highlights are added resulting in the final painting.
