PROCEDURE:
1) Start by making a 4-20 thumbnail sketches in graphite pencil and paper to stimulate the imagination and formulate a composition.
2) After a preliminary sketch has been chosen, using chalk to draw with, transfer the image onto the final canvas with a ground of venetian red.
3) Using white chalk, proceed to draw in the lights of the picture in blocks.
4) On top of the chalk, paint over the lights with white mixed with some turpentine to produce a grisaille - a monochromatic image. At this point you're aiming to get the painting to resemble an overexposed photograph.
5) Apply glazes (layers of transparent paint to show whites underneath) until the painting is complete.
